PS: These
are Fictitious Airfields
Aviation around and in the
Andes Mountains has been going on since the early 1900s. Many small
airfields have been built for emergency purposes as well as private ones
which are still open and many are closed and even banned and some have
been dstroyed through the
years.
This first part of "Dangerous
Airfields of the Andes" brings you Four very dangerous ones for your
enjoyment and will place you in very dangerous sorroundings that bush
pilots in many places of the world face every day. I plan to bring you
others from time to time..
LA RINCONADA... Located in Peru near the border of Bolivia, this airfield
is situated at 14, 435 FT in the Cordillera of the Andes. The airfield was
built by Ernest Guntherbung back in 1954 when he found a gold mine and
needed transportation to and from Cuzco to bring in tools and supplies as
well as a speede way of moving the gold to his business in that city.
After 10 years the mine went dry and now the only thing standing there is
the old terminal building which Ernest had placed there. No regular
flights happen any more and there is hardly any traffic there... See

REPISA
In
order to be very near the volcanoes that were studied by the World
Phylphon Organization in 1964 a small field was constructed on a nearby
ledge called La Repisa or the "Ledge". Closed for many years now its
opened again since a new expedition is on its way. Fly out to it and do
check it to confirm that it is still
usable. See

CERRO NEVADO RED CROSS
STATION
The Cerro Nevado Red
Cross Station has been active since 1934 as a rescue station for the many
mountain climbers that come to the region and specially around the
Aconcagua Mountain. Nurses train here to learn the techniques on mountain
help to those that for one reason or other suffer accidents in this
dangerous area. Fly two nurses there early in the morning with not very
good weather conditions. See

LA GARGANTA DEL DIABLO
This field was banned by
authorities in Colombia after an explosion in the nearby monastery. No one
is sure what happened there but many are sure that evil worshipping was
going on. Your curiosity has made you rent a plane and fly out there, some
say that those who fly in there ans survive get to see the large "Devil
Rock" that watches over the field. See Enclosed Route Map
FLYING OVER THE
ANDES
Have some nice flights and soon you will be
able to complete Part II of the series.
