Wizz Air inaugural flight from Budapest welcomed

aviation_newsToday was a landmark day for Wizz Air and Malta Airport as the new Malta-Budapest route kicked off its twice weekly flight operation. The inaugural flight touched down at 0853hrs and was given the customary water arch welcome by the Malta Airport Fire & Rescue Team – an honour reserved for new airlines.

Passengers were welcomed by dancers in traditional Maltese costumes and were given a flower, courtesy of the Malta Tourism Authority. A cake was also prepared for the occasion highlighting aspects of Malta and Hungary as well as the Wizz Air brand.
Following the welcome to passengers, Malta Airport CEO Markus Klaushofer addressed the local media, who were joined by Hungarian journalists who were on board the flight. He said that 2013 is a remarkable year for the airport with five new airlines. “Wizz Air’s addition – as the leading low cost airline in Eastern Europe – is a very important development for us. Together with the Malta Tourism Authority, we are working hard for this route to be a huge success and hope that it will lead to further cooperation in the future.”

Malta Tourism Authority CEO, Josef Formosa Gauci said that “The MTA welcomes the arrival of yet another airline to our islands. Wizz Air will assist us in our strategy to continue to diversify our markets and increase seat capacity flying in and out of the Maltese Islands.”

Daniel de Carvalho, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: “With two flights per week on Fridays and on Mondays and very low fares, we are sure this new route will be very popular for leisure in the Maltese sun and also as a weekend shopping destination for those who want to visit one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities – Budapest.”
