Harper government invests in safety at Manitoba airports

The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood—St. James—Assiniboia, today announced an investment of $666,819 for important safety improvements at the St. Andrews Airport, The Pas Airport, and the Thompson Regional Airport through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).

“These airports are vital gateways for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism,” said Minister Fletcher.  “This funding will enhance the safety for all those who use these airports, especially the communities and businesses in Winnipeg and Northern Manitoba.”

The St. Andrews Airport is receiving $35,867 to purchase a runway condition reporting system which will provide timely, accurate and precise wireless reporting and recording of runway conditions; The Pas Airport is receiving $418,952 for the replacement of a snowblower which will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways; and the Thompson Regional Airport is receiving $212,000 to replace a grader which will enhance the snow clearing operations and maintenance of the gravel runway.

“The Thompson Regional Airport Authority would like to thank the Government of Canada for its continued support of our Airport in funding this new grader,” said Curtis Ross, President and CEO.  “The funds we receive enable us to work together with Transport Canada in ensuring a safe and economically viable airport.  Without assistance from programs such as ACAP, the safety, comfort and reliability of our airport would not be what it is today.”

Since 2006-2007, through ACAP, the Government of Canada has invested more than $218 million for 264 projects at 96 airports.  Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
