BORDEAUX AIRPORT, +13.3% of international passengers at the end of May

The growth in low-cost flights in May has accelerated to +40%, compared to +29% in early 2012, helping to boost regular international traffic by 18.7% in May.
With the return of the summer season, regular international traffic has reached a new height of 18.7% growth with 141,900 passengers in May. Seasonal flights showed good volume of traffic: Montreal +63.1% (Air Transat), Dublin +40.9% (Aer Lingus) and Edinburgh +17% (Ryanair). Destinations in southern Europe representing close to 30% of monthly traffic have also seen excellent passenger traffic in traditional flights as well as in low cost: Venice – the new airline Volotea transporting more than 1,500 passengers during the launching month, in May. Other destinations such as Barcelona, Rome, Seville and Porto have also seen double digit growth, with an unchanging figure for North Africa, rising overall by 8.3%. 

There has been undisputed success for all existing domestic and international routes welcoming new operators: Lisbon +90.4% served by TAP then easyJet, Alger +47.1% with Air Algérie then Aigle Azur, Nice +72.7% with Air France then easyJet, and finally Marseille +63.8% with Air France then Ryanair. 
Domestic traffic, since the beginning of the year, has improved by +4.6% with varying results: flights to Paris Orly are down -2%, while the Charles de Gaulle Air France “hub” recorded a steady +9.3% increase, of which the majority of travellers were en route to foreign long-haul destinations.

Thanks to its success in a growing market, the new airline company Volotea announced in May two new departure destinations from Bordeaux as of October 2012: 4 weekly flights to Lille and 5 weekly flights to Strasbourg.
